Traveling and Exercising: Two Things that DO go Together
Why Exercising on the Road isn’t as Hard as you Think.
For those who travel often for business, maintaining a healthy lifestyle has added complications. It may seem like eating healthy and exercising are impossible while on the road but with some planning and education you can keep your weight loss goals while traveling.
“Road Food” is notorious for being high in fat and calories. Many people just give up on dieting since they know they will only be eating at restaurants while traveling. But you can also make this a unique opportunity. Unlike when you are in your own home and have a variety of foods that you can eat at any time, you are more limited on the road and do not have a stocked pantry. This can help you from mindlessly eating when you don’t need to and can force you to eat healthy snacks if that is all that you pack!
Since eating at either fast food or sit down restaurants will be unavoidable, you will want to do your homework ahead of time to find the healthy options among all of the bad ones. One way to do this is to go to the websites of your favorite restaurants and take a look at their nutrition info, you may be surprised at what is good and bad for you. Print off a list of “good” options at these restaurants to keep whenever you travel so that you can reference it. Another suggestion is to buy a book that lists nutrition information for many of America’s most popular restaurants. These books can be found in the dieting section at most bookstores, are small in size and cost less than $10, making it a great investment for travelers.
Many people say that are “just too busy” when traveling to find the time to workout. But this same reasoning can be applied to our everyday lives when we are at home, so find the time! Instead of watching a movie in your hotel room to “unwind” after a long day of meetings, use that time to try the hotel’s pool or workout center, this will be a much better way to burn off stress than sitting around. You will need to make room in your suite case for shoes and workout clothes. Some people take their oldest t-shirt and just throw it away when they are done so they don’t have to pack it again. Swimming is a great option since a swimsuit takes up little space in your luggage. You can even plan a nice walk, this will give you exercise while allowing you to enjoy a new town.
If you have more time, or are traveling for leisure, plan a day of walking or look up a place that rents bikes. Seeing a place on foot or on bicycle is a great way to get to know an area up-close as opposed to just driving around. Also look for parks where you can plan a day’s hike or plan a day at a beach where you can run, swim or play sports in the sand. If you look at physical activity as a fun pastime and not just a chore you have to perform, adding exercise to your travels can be quite easy.
Traveling can be a great way time to try out new strength moves. If the hotel gym has some equipment you haven’t used before, give it a try. Ab exercises, lunges and squats are great moves for in your hotel room. Consider packing a resistance band. These take up very little space and help you get a lot more out of your moves. Also, packing this and other things you need to exercise will encourage you to workout. Also, consider suggesting a workout or walk instead of a happy hour with a business partner, you may be surprised at their level of interest. This will also make you appear like an active person and you don’t have to worry about how many drinks is too much.
